How to Brief a Creator So You Don’t Get Generic Content Back

Most influencer campaigns are lost at the brief, not the booking. A brand pays for a creator’s voice, negotiates hard for the right person, then sends over a document that deletes the very thing it paid for. The content arrives on schedule and sinks without a trace.

The Two Ways Briefs Fail

Briefs fail in two directions. The first is the script: every talking point mandated, every caption pre-approved, the opening line written by committee. The creator reads it out, the audience recognises an ad read within two seconds, and the scroll continues. The second is the shrug: “just post something natural!” Given nothing to work with, the creator produces a pretty video that never mentions why anyone should visit, book or buy. Both failures cost the same money.

The good brief sits between the two. It fixes the destination and frees the route. The creator knows exactly what the content must achieve, and decides how to get there.

What a Good Brief Contains

One job. The single thing this content must achieve. Bookings for Thursday evening. Saves of the new menu. Test-drive sign-ups. If you cannot name the job in one sentence, the creator certainly cannot deliver it.

The three facts that must land. Never more than three. If a fourth feels essential, cut it anyway and save it for the next post. Creators can weave three facts into a story; ten facts produce a brochure.

What the audience should do next. The booking link, the discount code, the “DM us the word BRUNCH” prompt. Stated plainly in the brief, not raised as a comment on the second draft.

The boundaries. What cannot be said or shown, which competitors are off-limits, and the disclosure requirements for the market. Boundaries stated up front are rarely resented. Boundaries discovered at approval stage always are.

Creative freedom on everything else. The creator knows their audience’s language, humour and preferred format far better than the brand does. That knowledge is what you are renting. Let it work.

There is a regional layer to this. In Bahrain and across the GCC, agree the language mix up front: Arabic, English or the code-switched blend most feeds actually speak. Base that call on the creator’s real audience, not on head-office preference. We have written more on this in our guide to Arabic content marketing in Bahrain.

The Practical Mechanics

Send the brief before the fee is agreed. A creator quoting blind will quote for a generic post. When the quote reflects the real ask, both sides negotiate honestly and nobody feels ambushed later.

One approval round, defined in writing. Endless revision loops drain the life from content and sour the relationship. Agree what feedback covers (accuracy, boundaries, the call to action) and what it does not (the creator’s tone).

Handle access and logistics. The dish plated and ready at golden hour. The car charged. The room made up before the creator arrives. Half of what gets called disappointing content is really disappointing preparation.

Ask for the insights screenshot as a deliverable, not a favour. Reach, saves, profile visits and link taps belong in the contract. If you are unsure what those numbers should look like, start with our guide to engagement rates in Bahrain.

The Test of a Good Brief

Here is the test we use. If ten creators would produce ten identical videos from your brief, you have written a script. If ten creators would produce ten different videos that all achieve the same job, you have written a brief.

The platforms have made this test commercially relevant too. Instagram’s incentive programmes now reward original creator-made content over recycled brand assets; we cover the details in our piece on Instagram bonuses for GCC creators. A brief that leaves room for originality is also a brief the algorithm favours.
