WhatsApp Wants to Be Where You Find Businesses, Not Just Message Them

Meta is steadily rebuilding WhatsApp as a place where customers find businesses, not just message them. The company’s business discovery push, announced on the WhatsApp blog, lets users search for a business by name or category inside the app, browse its catalogue and, in select markets, pay without ever leaving the chat. WhatsApp’s own Help Centre now describes a full directory experience, with filters for category, distance and opening hours.

For the Gulf, this is less a new behaviour than an official blessing of an old one. WhatsApp is already the region’s informal commerce layer: menus arrive as PDFs, orders are taken in chat, bookings are confirmed by voice note, and half the boutiques in Bahrain run their entire customer service operation from a green icon. Meta is not teaching this region anything. It is formalising behaviour the Gulf invented, then wrapping search, catalogues and payments around it.

What Has Actually Launched, and Where

Precision matters here, so let us be honest about availability. WhatsApp’s in-app business search first went live in Brazil, Colombia, Indonesia, Mexico and the UK, and in-app payments began in India before being trialled in Brazil. Meta has not announced directory availability for Bahrain or the wider GCC, and WhatsApp’s Help Centre still notes the feature “may not be available in your area yet”. What is available to Gulf businesses today is the foundation: WhatsApp Business profiles and catalogues of up to 500 items, with prices supported in certain countries. The directory is the direction of travel; the profile and catalogue are the entry ticket.

What GCC Businesses Should Do Now

Claim and complete your WhatsApp Business profile. Name, category, hours, location, website. When discovery reaches this market, incomplete profiles will simply not surface well.

Build a real catalogue, with prices where supported. A customer who can browse without asking “how much?” is a customer closer to buying. Screenshots of menus do not count.

Set up quick replies and greetings. The inbox is now a sales channel. Saved answers for delivery, sizing and booking questions turn browsing into orders.

Treat response time as a revenue metric. Businesses that already answer DMs within minutes will win this shift. Those that reply the next morning will watch orders go to whoever answered first.

The Bigger Picture

Platforms keep collapsing the funnel. Discovery, decision and purchase increasingly happen inside a single app, whether that is TikTok Shop, Instagram’s storefronts or now WhatsApp’s directory. Practically, that means the brands that win are not the loudest but the most complete: present, priced, searchable and responsive wherever the customer already spends their day. In this region, that place has always been WhatsApp. Meta has finally caught up.
